Step Up for Scholars is a fourteen-day, open-ended step challenge. Each day between Aug. 1 – 14, one of our scholars will reflect on how our values inspire them and challenge participants to take as many steps as they can. Registration now open!

Join us for the second event in the Pat’s Run Challenge Series 2022: Step Up for Scholars!

Each day from Aug. 1 to Aug. 14, we’ll share a video from a Tillman Scholar via email and on social media reflecting on one of our values or leadership attributes and how it inspires them. Registration opens June 13!

As you reflect on how we can all integrate those values and attributes into your life, challenge yourself to take as many steps as possible — consider this an investment in yourself to create the mindset and energy you need to make an impact and a difference in your community.

Registration costs $35 — sign up for 42 in 40 and Step Up for Scholars at the same time, and you’ll pay just $70 for both events.

 

How Step Up for Scholars Works

This is a little different from a traditional event — we wanted to bring together a challenge that is defined by pushing ourselves a little bit every day, while also being inclusive of all athletic abilities and interests. Whether you run, walk, wheel, or hike, Step Up for Scholars has space for you. Here’s how it’ll work:

  1. Register starting June 13  — to ensure you receive race materials by Aug. 1, you must register by July 15.
  2. Watch the daily videos from Aug. 1 – Aug. 14 and take as many steps as you can! Share your progress or reflections on social with the tag #stepupforscholars.
  3. From Aug. 1 to Aug. 14, keep track of your steps using whatever method you prefer, and then each day, add your results manually in RunSignUp.
  4. Put your total number of steps into RunSignUp by Aug. 19.
  5. Join us on Aug. 23 for an event on YouTube Live to see our top 5 finishers and meet our scholars

What is Step Up for Scholars?

Join us for the second event in the 2022 Pat’s Run Challenge Series: Step Up for Scholars! In June, we’ll announce our fourteenth class of Tillman Scholars, and we’re going to celebrate each of our Tillman Scholar Classes with a 14-day step challenge. How many steps can you take between Aug 1. and Aug. 14? Each day we’ll highlight someone from each cohort of our remarkable community of veterans and military spouses.

What should I use to track my steps and report them?

Reporting results is easy as 1, 2, 3 — especially if you follow these three guidelines.
  1. On July 25, you’ll receive your virtual bib number in RunSignUp. Go to your profile and look up your number. If you can’t find it, reach out to us at .
  2. When the Step Up for Scholars Challenge begins on Aug. 1, track your steps using whatever method or app you prefer, and convert them to miles. (An easy conversion is that 2,250 steps is roughly a mile, so divide your total number of steps by 2,250. For example, if you take 7,700 steps, you’ll have completed roughly 3.4 miles)
  3. Add your total miles into RunSignUp by Aug. 19

What kind of swag do I get for signing up?

Every participant will get a custom Step Up for Scholars Sport-Tek t-shirt in marigold and maroon and a 4240 hat. Please note that the Sport-Tek shirts run large, so you may want to size up or down, depending on how you like your shirts. 

Unfortunately, due to global supply chain issues, we can’t do a medal for this one. But the hat’s pretty cool. You won’t miss the medal.

How will I get my swag?

Materials will be sent by mail. If you want to receive your items before the event starts on Aug. 1, you must register by July 15.

How can I change my shirt size after I have registered?

If you selected the wrong size option for your t-shirt, or made any other incorrect option selection, you can correct this from your profile.

To change your giveaway selection by following these steps:

  • Sign In to RunSignUp
  • Go to your Profile
  • See Upcoming Races
  • Click Manage Registration next to the registration that you are editing.

  • Click the Giveaway menu item

Changes can be made through July 15th.

How can I update my shipping address after I have registered?

If you need to update the shipping address for any reason, you can correct this from your profile.

To change your shipping address by following these steps:

  • Sign In to RunSignup
  • Go to your Profile
  • See Upcoming Races
  • Click Manage Registration next to the registration that you are editing.

  • Click the Shipping tab.

Changes can be made through July 15th.

When will my stuff ship?

We’ll begin shipping items in mid-July in the order that participants registered. Please check our website, stepupforscholars.org, for updates about shipping. We do not recommend you rely on Facebook or our Pat’s Run Facebook group for the latest information. We also have incorporated tracking information into our process, so you’ll be notified when your race packet ships.

How will I know my race packet has shipped?

We will send you a shipping confirmation email with your unique tracking link when your package ships so you can follow it on its path to your mailing address. If you have multiple registrants that share the same mailing address, all of the items may be in one race packet. Please check with the other members of your household to see if they have received an email with your tracking number.

Is there a size chart for the race shirts?

For this event, we are not offering children’s shirts and the Sport-Tek shirts run large. To get the most comfortable fit, please consult our Adult Size Chart.

How come I got charged per registration for shipping and handling even though we are in the same household?

We fulfill our race materials through a small, locally owned business based in Tempe, Arizona. This cost per registration is to help pay for the costs of packing and shipping. Items may be consolidated into one package but it is not guaranteed.

I have another question — how can I get customer service or assistance?

Reach out to us at [email protected] and we’ll reply as soon as we can! Contacting us at [email protected] is the best way to get help with issues. Please do not leave requests for help on our social media or the Pat’s Run Facebook Group, as we can’t always solve logistics issues from social media.

What is the Pat's Run Challenge Series?

A three-event series combining Pat’s Run with two virtual events later this year — including our third annual 42 in 40 Challenge! 

What is a race bundle?

A race bundle is a registration that will register you for all three events in the 2022 Pat’s Run Challenge Series. You may still register for the remaining 2 series as a bundle.

Why should I register for a bundle?

The bundles are the only way to get a discount registration for the Pat’s Run Challenge Series. If you wait until registration opens for each individual event, you’ll pay full price. 

What's included in the bundle?

Discounted registration for all three events, plus race swag for Pat’s Run, Step Up for Scholars, and the 42 in 40 Challenge.
