Pat Tillman Foundation Named an Official Charity Partner of the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon

Press Releases | 07/21/2015

New York, July, 21, 2015 — Pat Tillman Foundation will become an Official Charity Partner of the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon, it was announced today by Lauren Lopriore. The race will take place on Sunday, November 1, 2015.

“Pat Tillman Foundation is thrilled to partner with the TCS New York City Marathon as an official charity partner,” said Lopriore. “The TCS New York City Marathon provides a powerful platform for our passionate charity runners to fundraise and raise awareness for causes that are close to their hearts. We are looking forward to supporting our runners throughout their memorable journeys as they train for, and ultimately achieve their goal of completing this race, all while raising critical funds which benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation, which invests in military veterans and their spouses through academic scholarships.

Nearly 300 official charity partners are expected to participate in the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon this year.

Pat never stopped pushing the limits as an athlete. Told he was too small to ever play football, he defied skeptics, first as an All-American ASU Sun Devil and then, as a record-breaking safety for the Arizona Cardinals. Even in the off-season, he never quit challenging himself at marathons and half-Ironman triathlons nationwide.

Today, Team Tillman is keeping Pat’s passion and intensity alive while inspiring others to live up to their potential. A community of everyday athletes, civilian and military, we participate as a team or individually in marathons, half-marathons, triathlons, cycling and other athletic events to honor Pat. To date, we have raised nearly $1 million to fund scholarships for Tillman Scholars, who share Pat’s commitment to service, learning and action.

“We warmly welcome Pat Tillman Foundation as an official charity partner for the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon,” said Michael Rodgers, Vice President of Development and Philanthropy for New York Road Runners. “All of our participants are inspired to run for reasons significant and special to them, and we are especially appreciative of those who make a meaningful commitment to run on behalf of one of our official charity partners. We wish the best to all of these runners as they begin to plan and prepare for an experience of a lifetime at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon.”

The 2015 TCS New York City Marathon will feature a talented American and international professional athlete field, charity runners, and thousands of runners of all ages and abilities. More than 10,000 volunteers help to support participants across the 26.2-mile race route, which touches each of New York City’s five boroughs, and is lined with more than one million neighbors and guests. Last year, NYRR celebrated each of the 50,530 runners who crossed the finish line and made the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon the largest in the world, including the one-millionth finisher ever in the history of the event. Participants hailed from more than 130 countries and each of the 50 states.

The 2015 TCS New York City Marathon will again air live locally on ABC7 and nationally on ESPN2.

About the TCS New York City Marathon

The TCS New York City Marathon is the premier event of New York Road Runners (NYRR) and the largest marathon in the world. Held annually on the first Sunday in November, the race features the world’s top professional athletes and a vast range of competitive, recreational, and charity runners. The race began in 1970 with just 127 entrants running four laps around Central Park, and expanded citywide in 1976. In 2014, a record 50,530 runners from 130 countries toured New York City’s five boroughs, starting on Staten Island at the foot of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and running through the neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, before ending in Manhattan at the iconic Central Park finish line. More than one million spectators line the city streets to cheer on the runners, while millions more watch the live television broadcast in the United States and around the world. The race is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series featuring the world’s top marathons—Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York—and crowning the top professional male and female marathoners of the series.
