For more than a decade, 2023 Tillman Scholar Erin Edwards served as a Navy helicopter pilot, flying missions around the world. Now, she brings that same commitment to service to her work as an investigative journalist.
After completing her military service, Erin used her Tillman Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in journalism from Stanford University. She has since built an impressive writing portfolio, with bylines in The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, War Horse Journal, and ProPublica. Her reporting focuses on the challenges women face in male-dominated industries and the systemic barriers that limit inclusion, visibility, and equity.
Most recently, Erin contributed to ProPublica’s “Life of the Mother” series, which was awarded the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Her story, “A Coast Guard Commander Miscarried. She Nearly Died After Being Denied Care,” highlights the life-threatening consequences of abortion bans, particularly for women in the military.
Erin is among the nearly 1,000 Tillman Scholars driving change in their communities. Through her reporting, she’s helping to shed light on critical issues and give voice to those too often overlooked.
