Here at the Pat Tillman Foundation, leadership and service are at the heart of everything we do. No one demonstrates those values more than Dr. Katherine Steele, our CEO and a 2014 Tillman Scholar.

We’re thrilled to share that Katherine was recently named to Crain’s Chicago Business’ 2025 Notable Leaders in Philanthropy list. This annual recognition honors individuals making a meaningful impact in the nonprofit sector and setting a high standard for mission-driven leadership.

“I’m deeply honored to be recognized alongside so many inspiring leaders who are committed to creating positive change,” says Katherine. “As a Tillman Scholar, this acknowledgment is especially meaningful — it reflects not only my personal journey, but the collective impact of the Tillman Scholar community.”

Since stepping into the role of CEO in January 2024, Katherine has guided the Foundation with a clear and ambitious vision. In her first year as CEO, she has:

  • Spearheaded a record-breaking fundraising year, bringing in over $6 million to advance the Foundation’s mission.
  • Directed $1.5 million to scholarship funding for military service members, veterans, and spouses.
  • Expanded national partnerships with organizations like the National Football League, TEKsystems, Brooks Running, Southwest Airlines, IBM, and Calamos Investments.
  • Championed initiatives that empower Tillman Scholars, including mentorship programs, professional development opportunities, and national community service campaigns.

We’re proud to see Katherine’s leadership recognized by Crain’s and look forward to the continued growth of the Foundation under her guidance.
