As we prepare to introduce our newest class of Tillman Scholars, we’re taking a moment to bring you behind the scenes of the rigorous, months-long selection process that identifies the next generation of leaders.
Each year, thousands of remarkable military veterans, service members, and spouses apply to join the Tillman Scholar community. They bring with them diverse backgrounds, bold visions, and a strong desire to make an impact.
Through multiple rounds of reviews, thoughtful conversations, and careful evaluation, a committed team works to select individuals who best exemplify the values Pat Tillman stood for: humble leadership, service beyond self, scholarship, and impact.

Every application to the Tillman Scholar program goes through multiple rounds of review by our selection committees. These committees are made up of internal and external stakeholders, including Tillman Scholars, university partners, PTF board members, PTF staff, and longtime supporters. Committee members dedicate months of their time to carefully evaluating applications and discussing each applicant’s potential to lead and serve.
One of those committee members is Amber Manke, a 2012 Tillman Scholar and PTF board member. “Being part of the selection process is one of the most rewarding experiences,” she said. “As a scholar, I know firsthand what this opportunity means, and now, I get to help choose the next generation of leaders who will carry forward Pat’s legacy.” She added: “It’s incredibly meaningful to give back to a community that has given me so much.”
Each applicant to the Tillman Scholar program is evaluated through the lens of our four core values: humble leadership, service beyond self, scholarship, and impact. Committee members and reviewers look for individuals who lead with humility, care deeply about serving others, and see their education as a way to create change — not just a line on a résumé. It’s not only about what someone has done, but why they do it and who they’re hoping to impact along the way.
The strongest applicants have a clear sense of purpose. They’ve been shaped by their experiences, and they’re ready to use what they’ve learned to lead, serve, and drive meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
“Pat didn’t just talk about leadership and service, he lived it. That’s what we’re looking for,” said Alex Garwood, Pat Tillman Foundation co-founder. “People who lead with their values, who show up for others, and who are driven to do something bigger than themselves.”
This year, we received over 1,700 applications from across the country. The selection process spanned five months and was made possible by the 170 committee members and reviewers who generously dedicated their time, energy, and expertise. At every stage, reviewers approached their work with care, ensuring the process was fair, thorough, and grounded in our values. In addition to virtual collaboration, several stages of the process were hosted in person thanks to organizations like Alo Yoga, the NFL, and Bank of America, who opened their spaces to help facilitate meaningful conversations and final selections.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be announcing the 2025 Class of Tillman Scholars, so stay tuned! In the meantime, get to know our current scholars here.
