“I have been humbled through the volunteer opportunities that I have had and have especially been touched by the hardships that so many helpless children go through every day.”

A proud daughter of an educator and brave Marine, Kathryn Hernandez majored in psychology. The youngest of five children and a native Texan, Kathryn grew up in a small town where she excelled in academics and was greatly involved in volunteer efforts in the community through her school and other extracurricular activities such as student council and National Honor Society. Her passion for helping others came from the countless hours she spent visiting nursing homes, building homes through Habitat for Humanity, organizing canned food and clothing drives and mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Volunteering made Kathryn realize she wanted to offer support to people who were less fortunate, to work with children and to continue to make a difference in her community.

Kathryn passed away from cancer in May 2021. It was our honor to support her as a Tillman Scholar.
