Capt Sawmiller is the Area Defense Counsel for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska. He advises and defends Airmen at JBER in a broad range of military justice and adverse administrative actions. He also supports other Defense Counsel throughout the Air Force.

Capt Sawmiller enlisted in the Idaho Air National Guard in January 2005, where he specialized in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) defense and emergency management. While enlisted, he deployed twice to the AFCENT AOR and conducted joint operations in Iraq searching for WMDs. Prior to entering active duty, he clerked for the Honorable Daniel Eismann, Chief Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court. He received a direct commission as an Air Force Judge Advocate in December 2011 and entered active duty in January 2012. He is admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of Idaho, the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Prior to his current assignment, Capt Sawmiller served as the Chief of Military Justice at the JBER legal office.
