2010 Tillman Scholar
After struggling for years in school, Barrett enlisted in the Army during his junior year, through the delayed entry program and went to basic training after graduation. His time in the Army not only inspired him to pursue a career in the service to others, but also gave him the tools to achieve his goals, through hard work and discipline.
This passion to help others inspired him to go back to school after leaving the military and through hard work and discipline he graduated in 2009 Summa cum Laude with a degree in Physiology. He worked throughout his time as an undergraduate in an intensive care unit at a local hospital, which reinforced and fed his desire to continue his educational journey in the service and care of others. He made a decision that he never thought would be possible, and applied to medical school, which he was accepted to in 2010.
He was honored to be awarded the Tillman Scholarship to aid him and lessen his burden while attending medical school. After graduating medical school in the top 10% of his class, he spent a year as a surgical intern at the University of Colorado, a four year residency in Radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and a fellowship year in Body Imaging and Intervention at the Mayo Clinic.
His currently a Consultant Radiologist with the Mayo Clinic Health System in Minnesota, providing critical Emergency Radiology services to a large rural population throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. He remains an active Alumni Tillman Scholar and continues to be inspired by the tenacity and accomplishments of his fellow Tillman Scholars.
