Press Releases | 02/05/2014

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Pat Tillman Foundation announces the addition of three new University Partners in support of the Tillman Military Scholars program, which provides educational scholarships for veteran and active servicemembers and their spouses.

George Washington University, University of Alabama and University of Washington have been selected as Tillman Military Scholar University Partners for the 2013/2014 academic year, bringing the total number of partner institutions to 16.

The three universities join Arizona State University, Columbia University, Eastern Kentucky University, Mississippi State University, Texas A&M University, University of Arizona, University of Arkansas, University of Maryland, University of Michigan – Flint, University of Minnesota, University of Oregon, University of South Florida and University of Wyoming as University Partners.

The Pat Tillman Foundation is partnering with these institutions because each is a leader in support services for student veterans, active servicemembers and their families on campus. Each University Partner helps identify and select final candidates during the Tillman Military Scholar screening process and upon selection of Tillman Military Scholars on their campus, supports the building of community regionally throughout the United States.

“We are honored to be a Tillman Military Scholar University Partner,” said Michael Ruybal, coordinator of Veterans Services at George Washington University. “These scholarships will provide unprecedented opportunities for our student veterans to pursue their lifelong dreams and career opportunities. It gives GW one more way to demonstrate our commitment to the personal successes of those who sacrificed so much to protect our great nation.”

In 2008, the Pat Tillman Foundation established the Tillman Military Scholars program, dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for servicemembers and their spouses by filling the financial gaps in the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. The Tillman Military Scholars program covers not only direct study-related expenses such as tuition and fees, but also other needs, including housing and childcare.

“The University of Oregon is extremely proud of our continued partnership with the Pat Tillman Foundation and the Tillman Military Scholars who have earned this recognition for their dedication to service, education and leadership,” said Gretchen Jewett, director of Veterans Education and Support. “The Pat Tillman Foundation has provided our Scholars with much needed financial support along with unparalleled opportunities to connect with a strong national network, serve others and develop professionally and as leaders. We are truly appreciative of the Pat Tillman Foundation’s work that so effectively facilitates positive, lifelong change in the Tillman Military Scholars and has helped our campus, and many others, to serve our nation’s veterans and servicemembers.”
